Data Centres in Indonesia - Riding the AI Wave

Indonesia is emerging as one of Southeast Asia's most attractive data centre markets driven by strong digital demand and hyperscaler investment, with capacity projected to exceed 2 GW by 2030.

Indonesia’s strategic location and youthful demographic, paired with high internet penetration, provide a robust foundation for long-term data centre demand in Indonesia.

Technological tailwinds, particularly the rollout of AI and 5G in major cities are driving the need for high-density, low-latency, and scalable infrastructure. This is reinforced by government mandates on data sovereignty, which requires public service data to be hosted locally, compelling enterprises to migrate to in-country facilities. Initiatives such as “Making Indonesia 4.0” are accelerating digital transformation across industries, leading to a surge in data consumption and storage needs.

Connectivity improvements, such as new submarine cables linking Indonesia to Singapore and global markets, are enhancing the country’s appeal as a regional data centre hub. At the same time, major investments and commitments from global hyperscalers are generating strong ecosystem effects and partner demand, reinforcing Indonesia’s position in the digital economy.

However, the availability of reliable power and water resources remains a critical challenge. As data centre development accelerates, balancing infrastructure growth with sustainability considerations will be essential to ensure long-term economic, environmental, and social benefits.
