New Homes On Public Sector Land

Additional land in wider public sector to help meet government targets for housing delivery

Newly released Land Registry data suggests that the public sector owns at least 6 per cent of all freehold land in England and Wales according to a new report commissioned by Telereal Trillium, carried out by Savills Research. Within urban local authorities this rises to 15 per cent, representing a huge opportunity for new homes to be built in areas of great need, and to provide vital financial receipts.

This report focuses on what public sector landowners are doing to accelerate the identification of surplus land, while finding the skills and capacity to bring forward a fast growing pipeline of development sites. We review the options for engagement with the private sector, including sale, partnerships, and direct development, and how the public sector’s objectives will determine the most effective disposal routes.
